What is counselling?

Counselling gives you the opportunity to talk openly about whatever is going on for you, in a space where you can feel listened to and accepted. It can help you make sense of your thoughts, feelings and experiences, gain a clearer understanding of yourself, leaving space for change if that is what you want from therapy.

What can counselling help with?

There are many reasons why someone might decide to try counselling. You may be dealing with anxiety, stress, low mood, difficulties in a relationship, bereavement, struggles with confidence or self-esteem, or a change in your life that has left you feeling uncertain about what comes next.

Often there isn't one particular issue at all. You may simply feel unsettled, overwhelmed, or aware that things don't feel quite right. Counselling can give you the time and space to talk things through.  Sometimes the opportunity to talk openly with someone is enough to start the therapeutic journey.

Who is counselling for?

Counselling can be helpful for those experiencing difficulties or changes in their lives, as well as those who need a safe space and the time for reflection. You don't have to be in crisis to seek counselling, and you don't need to wait until things become overwhelming.

What happens in the first session?

You don't need to prepare anything beforehand or know exactly where to start. The first session is an opportunity to simply talk and start the therapeutic journey regarding what has led you to seek support. You decide what feels comfortable to share in the counselling room as it arises.

What if I'm nervous about starting counselling?

Feeling nervous is completely understandable. Talking with someone you've never met before can feel daunting. I provide a welcoming, relaxed and non-judgemental environment where you can be yourself and move at your own pace.

How long are the sessions? How many? How Often?

Sessions are 50-minutes long. There is no set number of sessions. Some people find a few sessions helpful; others prefer longer-term counselling allowing more time to explore things in greater depth. Regular weekly sessions provide initial continuity and momentum; however, we will find what works best for you and review once started.

What if I don't know whether counselling is right for me?

That’s completely understandable. If you’re unsure about counselling, an initial free conversation gives us a chance to talk informally before you decide whether you’d like to go any further. You can ask any questions you have and get a feel for how I work. There’s no pressure to make a decision straight away.

How do I arrange an appointment?

You don't need to know exactly what you want to say. Just let me know that you're interested in counselling and we'll take it from there. Often the first step is simply having a conversation.

You can contact me by email or telephone to ask any questions or arrange an initial free conversation.

Your enquiry will be treated with respect and confidentiality.
